~ Reasons to Legalize ~

In the United States, marijuana is included in the whole illegal drug subculture which is associated with criminals and mental/psychological illness. As a result, many marijuana users tend to try more dangerous drugs such as heroin and cocaine- which are generally available in the contemporary drug scene. If marijuana was legalized, then people would be less likely to experience the "gateway" effect because they would not already be breaking a law by smoking marijuana. The War on Drugs has also made a mockery of our criminal justice system. People charged with possession of marijuana or other drugs often serve more time in jail that violent criminals ... and the violent ones are routinely released to make room for the drug offenders. These drug offenders have not violated other's rights... they are college students who are hanging out at their academic institutions... they are artists and musicians... they are people who bring interesting ideas into the world. They are being imprisoned, while those who commit violent crimes- beating their wives, children, and helpless victims- are released onto the street to take away the right to the pursuit of happiness and safety from all people in society. The War on Drugs must end- for the freedom and safety of all. |
